Layer 6 — Composable Clearing

Credit built on credit.

Narrator's Open A single promise reaches only as far as the two hands that make it. But promises can be woven — one person's debt becoming another's asset, that asset backing a third person's venture — until a web of obligation spans a whole civilization, letting strangers who will never meet build on one another's word. This is the rigging of the ship: the network of lines that lets the whole crew pull together. Woven well, it carries the work of the world. Woven carelessly, one snapped line takes the rest down with it.

The core functionPromises that connect, net, and settle

Below this layer, credit is created one bound exchange at a time. Here it is composed — promises linked to promises, each obligation able to become the ground for the next. And underneath the weaving sits the quiet machinery of clearing: the process by which everyone who owes everyone else is netted down, at the end of the day, to who actually must pay whom.

You use this layer every time you tap a card. In that instant almost nothing real moves — your bank promises the merchant's bank, a network in the middle notes who owes whom, and millions of these small promises are bundled and squared up in bulk later. That bundling-and-settling is what lets an entire economy run on credit without dragging base money across the floor for every cup of coffee. It is the layer that turns a billion individual promises into a few honest settlements.

The giftCoherence extended past the reach of any hand

This is the layer where money most fully does what it was first invented to do: extend trust past the edge of the people you can see. Composability is field-normalization made real — credit reaching into corners of the economy that direct, face-to-face exchange could never touch. A business in one country gets paid by a customer in another with no gold shipped between them. A young family buys a home they could not have saved for in cash. Capital flows to where it is needed because a chain of linked promises can carry it there.

Done honestly, this is coherence propagating outward — the vector of reciprocity reaching further with every link, weaving more of the world into a single fabric of cooperation. It is the rigging catching the wind, turning the effort of a scattered crew into forward motion no single sailor could produce alone.

The Game A failureWhen the weave becomes a tower

But a web of promises has a dark twin. When the promises stop pointing at anything real — when credit is stacked on credit purely to be stacked, claims written against claims in a tower that has forgotten what it was built on — the weaving turns brittle in exact proportion to how tangled it got. Every connection that transmitted coherence in the good times now transmits collapse in the bad.

This is 2008, told in the stack's language. Home loans that could not be paid were bundled into bonds, bundled into instruments no one fully understood, each layer composed atop the last until the tower stood miles above the ground it rested on. When the bottom promises broke, every promise built upon them broke in a cascade — and the clearing machinery seized, because suddenly no one trusted that anyone else's promises were good. The rigging did not just fail; it dragged the whole ship sideways, because everything had been lashed to everything else. That is the finite-game endgame of this layer: connection without grounding, a weave optimized for extraction until the moment it tears.

The Game B functionA weave that always reaches the ground

The cure is not to unweave the web — the web is the gift, the very thing that extends coherence. The cure is to make sure every strand of it can be traced back down to something real. Because the credit at this layer is denominated in the un-held measure of the seam and, when discharged, settles down through the base rather than piling up forever, the tower can never fully lose its footing. Promises are extinguished as they are met, not accumulated into an ever-taller stack of claims on claims. The weave stays a weave — a living network of current obligation — instead of hardening into a monument waiting to fall.

And this is the layer that most directly widens the game. Every new participant a composable network brings in, every stranger it lets build on the trust of others, is another player drawn into the great cooperative game of exchange. Kept grounded, L6 is the mechanism by which the game keeps growing — reaching more hands, weaving more of the world in — which is the infinite game's whole aim: not to win and close the board, but to bring more players onto it and keep the play alive.

Where it sitsThe rigging between the deck and the sky

Layer 6 sits above the coupled credit of Layer 5 and below the open sky of the market at Layer 7. It takes the honest promises made just beneath it and weaves them into the wider network that carries value across the whole economy. It is the muscle that moves when the market's price signals fire — the machinery through which the coordination the prices call for actually happens, capital flowing to where the signal says it is needed. Below it, credit is born and grounded. Above it, the market decides where that credit should go. L6 is the connective tissue that carries the decision out into the world — as far as the rigging can reach.

Narrator's Close A ship is not its keel alone, nor its cargo, nor even its crew — it is the rigging that binds them into one moving thing, that lets a pull on one line be felt across the whole vessel. So it is here. This is the layer that turns a scattered multitude of promises into a single fabric of cooperation spanning the earth. Weave it to reach the ground at every point, and it carries the work of a civilization. Weave it to float free, and it becomes the most beautiful trap ever built. The difference is not in the weaving. It is in whether every line, followed down, still reaches solid ground.
